We had a beautiful 88 mile ride from Eminence to Farmington, including another sunrise, with 6,927 elevation gain. Most of the elevation happened in the beginning of the ride with more steep, steep hills. Just in case you’re behind, we’ve ridden 6K+ elevation gain everyday for the past three days for a total of 19,991… Continue reading Day 37 : owning the ozarks

Day 36 : give ‘er hell
“Give ‘er hell, give ‘er hell” as this guy shouted with dip, making a fist out of a huge pickup. Just after he yelled at us we ascended a 2 mile 12% climb. Early morning with a 5:20am start for our 108.4 mile ride to Eminence, MO. We gained 6,867 feet of elevation & rode… Continue reading Day 36 : give ‘er hell
Day 35 : hello steep
Today was Winona’s favorite! We started off with a sunrise: In total, we climbed 6,197 feet in 91 miles. The hills in Missouri are really steep! Climbing them is about 8mph and downhills are about 30mph. Momentum really helps to eliminate some of the pedaling. We used all our gears today, constant shifting. Humidity still… Continue reading Day 35 : hello steep
Day 34 : toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore
We’re in Missouri! We started off this morning with another beautiful sunrise in 95% humidity. A few miles down the road, we saw this sign ‘road closed’: We took the detour around & rode on! In total we rode 81 miles today, most of it in the clouds. We were chased into Missouri, our… Continue reading Day 34 : toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore
Day 33 : long, hot, climby
Early wake up this morning at 4:30. By the time we ate our regular breakfast (protein, yogurt, OJ) and got the bikes packed it was 5:34 and we started the 96.5 mile ride to Chanute, our final Kansas sleep. Sunrise on point this morning: In Eureka, 34 miles in, we ran into Todd & Liz,… Continue reading Day 33 : long, hot, climby
Day 32 : Winona’s first flat, ride summary, things we’ve learned
We rode the 74 miles to El Dorado (pronounced El DoRADo) in 5:14 – here’s the ride profile. We rode on the TransAmerica route for a while and saw a lot of these signs: And other bike tourists – Liz & Todd, you can find their blog here. We met them as Sergio was fixing… Continue reading Day 32 : Winona’s first flat, ride summary, things we’ve learned
Day 31 : today was a good day
6am and we’re eating homemade breakfast at our fantastic B&B (we haven’t eaten homemade in so long)! 7am we’re on the road. It’s cloudy, so we watch the sunrise through the clouds. The first 20 miles had minimal wind & the remaining 64 had full crosswind. Winona’s legs didn’t wake up until mile 45, at… Continue reading Day 31 : today was a good day
Day 30 : no, we’re not homeless
Late start this morning, we left the hotel in Dodge City and stopped at Walmart for a resupply. Winona went shopping while Sergio waited with the bikes and overheard kids asking if we’re homeless. Today’s ride was mostly wheat fields, old buildings, old cars, and, oh and more wind turbines. We kept riding the flat… Continue reading Day 30 : no, we’re not homeless
Day 29 : dodge, city
59 miles to Dodge City today with a mild headwind (8mph). We passed several wind turbines, all moving of course. The turbines are so huge! A very common sign: This video sums up our riding through Kansas so far: At the gas station in Meade, we saw the family we were with last… Continue reading Day 29 : dodge, city
Day 28 : so it blows
70 terrible miles from Perryton, TX to Meade Lake State Park, KS. We fought a 17+ mph headwind the entire way, as a result we averaged about 9.8mph for the day. In comparison, we did 105 miles from Tucumcari to Amarillo in about the same time we did today’s ride. In total, we climbed about… Continue reading Day 28 : so it blows
